In March 2006, Anna Ayala and Jaime Plascencia staged a plot to reap millions from the fast food chain, Wendy’s. Plascencia obtained a severed human finger from one of his co-workers who had lost it in an accident. The couple proceeded to place the finger in a bowl of Wendy’s chili and attempted to sue for damages. Authorities were wary of the claim the entire time as the finger was never cooked as it should be if it had in fact been in the pot of chili. The ensuing media blitz cost Wendy’s an estimated 2.5 million dollars. The couple pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy to file a false insurance claim and attempted grand theft. Ayala faces nine years in jail and Plascencia faces twelve.
